Parents across greater Chattanooga search for a tutor who is still a teacher at heart: someone who can explain fractions without shame, rebuild reading fluency without tears, and stretch a strong student without another packet of busywork. That is Mandi’s lane. Amanda “Mandi” Thurmond, M.Ed. is a licensed teacher with 18 years in elementary classrooms — literacy leadership, curriculum design, and intervention — now coaching one student at a time.
Reading support that feels like a win
When reading is slow or comprehension falls apart, homework night gets hard for everyone. Sessions focus on fluency, sense-making, and confidence so the page feels solvable. Mandi uses classroom-tested approaches, not a franchise script. Bring the current book, a teacher note, or a passage that keeps stalling — she meets the child where they are.
Math that rebuilds number sense
Chattanooga families often ask for help with number sense, place value, fractions, multi-step problems, and the “I can’t” that shows up before the pencil even moves. Mandi slows the work down, makes the concept visible, and practices until the panic quietens. Same one-on-one hour for classroom catch-up or enrichment when the assignment is already finished too fast.

Many families book for reading or math and also need help organizing writing, building homework routines, or preparing calmly for classroom and state assessments. Accelerated K–8 students can stretch with deeper reading, richer math, and real writing — still $40/hour, still no package pressure.
Where sessions happen
All sessions are in person at Mandi’s house in Red Bank, a short drive for many Chattanooga and Hixson families. The street address is shared only when you book; it is never listed on this website. Evenings and flexible appointment times. Call or text (929) 256-3772 (Google Voice).

Scenic City Learning (this site: sceniccitylearning.com) is Mandi’s independent tutoring practice. We are not Scenic City Learning Center (sceniccitylearningcenter.com) and not Scenic City Speech. If you meant Mandi’s K–8 tutoring at $40/hour with no contracts, you are in the right place.
